All's fair when you're in love with War.

For seventeen-year-old Mia Ahlström, a world ruled by order is the only world she allows. A lifetime of chore charts, to-do lists and study schedules have helped earn her a spot in Redwood State University’s engineering program. And while her five-year plan includes finding her very own happily-evah-aftah, years at an all girls’ boarding school left her woefully unprepared for keg parties and co-ed extracurricular activities.

So nothing surprises her more than catching the eye of Tyr Fredriksen at her first college party. The imposing Swede is arrogantly charming, stubbornly overprotective, and runs hot-and-cold in ways that defy reason . . . until Mia learns that she’s fallen for the Norse God of War; an immortal battle deity hiding on Midgard (Earth) to protect a valuable Asgardian treasure from a feral enemy. With a price on his head, Tyr brings more than a little excitement to Mia’s rigidly controlled life. Choosing Tyr may be the biggest distraction—or the greatest adventure—she’s ever had.

Perfekt Order brings us the story of seventeen year old Mia Ahlström as she moves to Arcata, California to attend Redwood State University. During a run her first day, Mia is attacked by a large wolf-like monster and is saved by Tyr Fredriksen. From that moment, Mia's life is forever changed. Turns out that Tyr is the Norse God of War and dark forces are out to bring him down and they have no problem using Mia to achieve their goal. Mia's life of perfekt order is about to be shaken to its core. When you're in love with the God of War, order is the last thing you need to worry about.

I've been a fan of this world since reading the Elsker Saga and I really enjoyed this new adventure with a new Norse Crew in the Ære Saga. I'm pretty sure that Perfekt Order takes place slightly before the events in the Elsker Saga - I'm still a bit confused on the timeline - and it's a lot more battle-heavy than the previous series, which only makes sense since our main male character is the Norse God of War. Basically, in Perfekt Order, Mia finds herself in the middle of a war between the Ære Crew and Fenrir, who is working with someone determined to bring down the God of War. So there's this constant battle-readiness throughout the story and they are always on alert for the next attack. But even with all this action, S.T. Bende was able to seamlessly weave a beautiful romance between Mia and Tyr and some pretty great humor into the story. Each element is perfektly balanced and I didn't feel like one element overpowered the others. This story just drew me in. I'm so invested in this story and the characters in it, that I'm going nuts without the next book. Especially after the sneak peek of the second book at that end of the book. February seems so far away!

I was in love with Ære Crew from the very beginning. Mia is a very strong character and extremely stubborn. She is a very organized and analytical person. Anything illogical doesn't belong in her world. But then Tyr enters her life and her perfektly ordered life becomes chaotic. Mia and Tyr are very much alike, and being the God of War has made him extremely protective of those he loves, especially since he's lost a lot of this loved ones to his enemies. Mia's stubbornness and Tyr's protectiveness clash a lot in this book. These were the times when Mia kind of annoyed me. Any other time I loved Mia so much, but it seemed that whenever Tyr tried to protect her from Fenrir, she wanted to put herself right out there in danger. A human cannot win in a battle with the monsters of Asgard's underworlds. But aside from the arguments they had about her safety, Mia and Tyr compliment each other perfektly. I'm looking forward to seeing glimpses of them in the next books and seeing how they progress in their relationship with all the chaos happening around them.

Not only does Perfekt Order have great main characters, but the rest of Ære Crew and Mia's roommates are equally awesome. This book just has such an amazing cast of characters. I absolutely loved Brynn and Henrik, who are Tyr's friends and bodyguards. Brynn ends up being one of Mia's roommates and Henrik also happens to be Gunnar's older brother. If you've read the Elsker Saga, Gunnar is Ull's best friend. Brynn's energy is through the roof and her obvious feelings for Henrik make her a target for quite a bit of teasing between her roommates. Henrik is an engineering genius, which gains him a lot of respect from Mia. And there are just so many other great characters, such as Freya, Forse, Elsa, and Mia's roommates Heather and Charlotte. The characters in this book are so uniquely themselves and I just couldn't help loving them all.

Finally, this book is so beautifully written. I loved how descriptive S.T. Bende was with the scenery, the characters, and basically everything in the world of this book. The suspense has a really great build-up each time a battle happens and that first scene when Mia was attacked had me on the edge of my seat. There's also some really great humor in this book, which I think was really needed with how serious the story could become at times. I loved how the title, and even just the word perfekt, was used throughout the story. Like I mentioned before, every element in this book is really well balanced and I really liked that there wasn't too much of one thing. I think I can sum up what I thought and felt for this book in one word: PERFEKTION!

He was the player. The most popular guy in highschool. In other words, the stereotypical heartbreaker that every girl died for.

She was one of the nerds. The outcast teased and shunned by the popular kids in school. In other words, him and his crew.

He always wanted her, she just never knew it . . .

In order to maintain his popularity, he buried those feelings deep, deep down in the pit of his miserable little soul.

That is, until one night he lost control.

They both did.

Unfortunately, they weren’t the only ones that knew it. What his friends ended up doing with the knowledge would scar her for the next seven years of her life.

And leave him wrecked, dealing with years of agony because he’d lost her.

Highschool graduation came and went, and they never saw each other again.

Now, seven years later, Andrew’s stepped in and taken his father’s place as CEO of his family’s company, Drevlow Systems, Inc.

Along with the new position comes a host of perks . . . and a brand new systems genius working as the head of his company’s IT department.

An IT genius that just happens to be the one woman he never forgot.

She hasn’t forgotten him or his reputation either and she wants nothing to do with him.

He’s determined to have her—she’s determined to see him burn in hell before that happens.

What ensues takes the term War of the Sexes to a whole new level.

{Episode #1}

Andrew is forced to face his past in a way he’d never expected.

Or prepared for.

Seven years.

That’s how long he waited to find Lexi again. Seven years worth of memories. Fantasies that tormented his life, making it impossible for him to move on.

Seven years worth of guilt for what he’d inadvertently allowed to happen.

He had it all planned out, every step of the epic-groveling he knew he’d have to do.

His plan was absolutely perfect.

Genius, actually.

Then he walked into his company’s IT department and seen the same big, blue-gray eyes that had haunted him for years . . .

Glaring at him from behind familiar, black-framed glasses.

And Andrew knew, right then, without a doubt . . .

That his plan wasn’t worth sh*t.

Disclaimer: Systematic Siege: Provocative Tendencies is a series of short stories, each roughly 10,000-15,000 words long, with an estimated final total of nine episodes for the entire series.

Mini Book Review:

I absolutely loved this first part of Systematic Siege: Provocative Tendencies. This book is told from Andrew's point of view and it switches from the present to 7 years in the past. So we get to see what's happening now and then we are taken back to the events that lead our characters to where they are now. I really liked that. Part One pretty much focuses on Andrew's obsessive love for his childhood friend, Lexi. But we also see that there is an evil out to destroy what they are building together.

There is this slow but fast-paced (does that make sense?) build up to Andrew meeting Lexi again after 7 years, but it's not the reunion he was hoping for. The build up though was something else, because you're so into the story that when it cuts off you just want to scream NO! You want the second part right away, especially since there are a couple chapters as a preview at the end of the book. The next part is told from Lexi's point of view and I have a feeling that the story is going to be getting much darker. I'm really looking forward to continuing this series.

Rating:

I gave Systematic Siege: Provocative Tendencies #1 a 5 STAR rating. The story build up was fantastic. It literally makes you want to read the next book, because the story sucks you in so much that when the end comes you're not expecting it. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with Andrew and Lexi now that they've met again after 7 years, and I'm also looking forward to reading Lexi's side of the story. I need Part Two now!

Aidan

Surf.
Fuck.
Get high.

Sounds like the perfect day to Aidan Callahan. As second-born son to Chicago’s most influential business owner, Aidan’s life has always been about responsibility. Tradition. Toeing the goddamn line. Just do as you’re told, Aidan. Don’t make waves.

Well, screw that. Riding waves is way more fun than making them.

Hawaii is paradise on earth. Smoking hot women. Tiny bikinis. As far as Aidan’s concerned, wild horses couldn’t drag him kicking and screaming back to the windy city. Or at least that’s what he thought.

When his brother crashes his Mercedes, killing himself on impact, Aidan finds himself next in line to the Callahan fortune and all the ties that come with it.

And this time there’s no getting out of it.

Essie

A warm bed.
A steady job.
A brother who loves her.

For Essie Floyd, life’s been one hard kick in the teeth after another. With her parents both dead, her brother is her only living relative. That is until Vaughn’s truck is written off, his life snatched away by the careless actions of a rich playboy in a flashy sports car.

Now, the only thing that will bring Essie peace is revenge. She must take what was taken from her. Only when the name Callahan has been wiped from the face of the earth forever will she be able to start living again.

Of course, the new head of the Callahan Corporation isn’t what she expected. Aidan’s sexy and sad, and just as damaged as she is. Will she be able to distance herself enough to accomplish her goal?

After all, ruining a man’s really hard when you find yourself falling for him…

Book Review:

Heart's Revenge is a highly emotional book! Essie and Aidan were enjoying their lives. Essie and her brother Vaughn were finally able to get their own apartment and things were looking up for them. Aidan was living life on the beaches of Hawaii, surfing and teaching, the only dark spot was his brother Alex constantly trying to get him to come back home to Chicago. Their lives are changed forever by a fatal car crash that kills Essie and Aidan's families; Aidan's brother and parents and Essie's beloved brother Vaughn. The accident was Alex's fault, and now Essie is out to get revenge on the only remaining Callahan left, Aidan.

Essie and Aidan change a lot after the accident. Their personalities do a kind of switch. Before the accident Essie was extremely loving and devoted, now all she cares about is getting revenge. She never opens her heart to anyone, she's done drugs and slept around a lot on her path to achieving her goal. Aidan on the other hand was wild and free before the accident surfing, sex and drugs, now he's responsible and caring, though he's still "sexually charged." It's like the accident caused Essie to lose her ability to love and care for people, including herself, while Aidan was able to open his heart and care for people other than himself.

Essie's need for revenge has completely consumed her. And her target is greatly misplaced. Aidan may be a Callahan, but he had absolutely nothing to do with the accident that killed Vaughn. It was kind of disturbing how when Aidan tells her about all the people he now feels responsible for and basically show her that he's not who she thought he was, she wasn't swayed that much to change her mind. Aidan senses that something else is going on with her sudden interest in him, but he doesn't know what it is. If it were me, and considering all the circumstances that bind them together, I'd almost immediately be thinking that she's up to no good.

They have explosive chemistry, but any kind of relationship that they have will be marred by the accident. So it's going to be interesting to see where things will go with them after that cliffhanger at the end of the book. That was a really cruel cliffhanger and I desperately want the next book to see what's going to happen next.

Rating:

I gave Heart's Revenge a 5 STAR rating! I cried when the news of the accident was delivered to Essie and Aidan, mostly Essie though, because she loved her brother fiercely. I'm really looking forward to seeing if Essie will go through with her revenge plans. I'm also looking forward to seeing what happens between her and Aidan. This debut novel was so incredible good! It caught me and didn't let go until I was finished, and even still it's claws are in me waiting for the next book. This is definitely a must read!

5 Star Book Review | Quarter Mile Hearts by Jenny Siegel

QUARTER MILE HEARTS (American Muscle #1)
by Jenny Siegel
Published: July 7th, 2015
Genres: New Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Sports
Purchase: Amazon
Following an accident injuring her dad, twenty-four year old Leigh Storm returns home to the town she was once so desperate to escape.

It is only a matter of hours before she runs into Max 'Manwhore' Morgan. Dark eyed and dangerous to her heart, he is the very last person she wants to see. It might have been four years since she saw him last, but there's no denying the chemistry between them is as potent as ever. Max makes it clear he isn't about to let her run again, even if he is the one thing Leigh vowed to herself she would never date: a street racer.

After racing tore apart her own family and left a path of destruction in its wake, Leigh decided long ago that it is not the life she wants for herself. But when a wager gone wrong threatens her dad's livelihood, Leigh must go against everything she believes in.

This time there's more at stake on the quarter mile that just the family business-She's risking her heart as well.

Cover Review:

Quarter Mile Hearts is all kinds of sexy and this cover really shows that. There's explosive sexual tension and really fast cars. I just love everything about this cover. The colors are perfect, the models portraying Max and Leigh look how I pictured them, and the speed lines of the car let you know that car racing is involved in this story. This cover is perfect for this book.

Book Review:

In Quarter Mile Hearts, Leigh returns home after her father has an accident racing cars with his buddies. In her small town, car racing is the only real source of entertainment, so she's been around cars and racing her whole life. She loves car and driving them fast, but racing tore her family apart and she vowed to never race and never date a racer. Her father's latest accident only reinforces her belief that racing only brings trouble. And one big source of trouble finds her in Max Morgan, her long-time love interest and well-known quarter mile car racer.

Leigh and Max, phew! They are one fire during this entire book! Whether it's from their explosive chemistry or their raging animosity toward each other, both really stem from their frustration. They have feelings for each other, but each has something that prevents them from moving forward. But Max has decided that he's done fighting their attraction and instead fights for Leigh. But Leigh doesn't want to date a racer and potentially lose someone else she loves. There is this tug-of-war that heightens all their emotions, good and bad.

Another source of trouble that racing has brought into Leigh's life recently is the bet her father lost in the race that caused his accident. Now her family's garage is in jeopardy and the only thing she can do to save it is race and win. That was an intense time, but also exhilarating.

So the promises that Leigh made to herself never to do - race and date a racer - are completely obliterated by circumstances. She can't fight her attraction and love for Max any longer, and there's no way she's going to lose her family's garage to the likes of the Anderson family.

I completely enjoyed this book and I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Rating:

I gave Quarter Mile Hearts a 5 STAR rating. This book is all kinds of hot and steamy. The chemistry between Max and Leigh is explosive. I loved their story and how they finally let themselves love each other after so long. I even really enjoyed the racing parts. This was my first time reading a book that had car racing, so it was a new experience for me. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can't wait for the next one in the series.

5 Star Book Review | Claiming Charity by Ann Gimpel

CLAIMING CHARITY (GenTech Rebellion #3)
by Ann Gimpel
Published: June 9th, 2015
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Military, Romance, Science Fiction, Suspense
Provided by Bewitching Book Tours for Review

What does it take to move past a lifetime of hating?

Charity’s luck never ran strong because her original configuration was unstable. Her handlers designed experiments to fix the problem, but only made it worse. Sick to death of living under their thumb, she jumps at a chance to escape her compound. She’s no sooner settled in as a CIA special operative—a role where she can put her augmented mind and body to use—when her wobbly genetics escalate.

Tony’s a freak—a genetically altered human waging war against the government. He snaps up an offer of amnesty, walking away from his role as a genetic researcher to work for the CIA. When Charity collapses in a severe seizure, he labors to save her life, but nothing’s working. In a last ditch effort, he joins his mind to hers and discovers he wants her more than he’s ever wanted anything. Only problem is she hates every single male freak for how they treated women in the compounds.

Charity recovers from her medical crisis, but all she can think about is Tony. Furious, determined to never let anyone like him near her, she blocks him from her mind, but he seeps back in anyway. Loving someone like Tony is a huge risk, a gamble that could throw her already precarious genes into a tailspin.

Knowing all that, why the hell is she considering it?

Cover Review:

The covers for all the books in the GenTech Rebellion series are really great, including Claiming Charity. I like the yellow and green coloring. The woman really makes me think of Charity. Charity is the more stoic of the women, and the model portraying her on the cover really brings that out.

The model portraying Tony doesn't really bring the character to mind when I look at the cover. The expression on the man's face looks kind of smug, and Tony never seemed that way to me in the book. One final things that looks kind of awkward is their positions to each other.

Okay, it would seem that my problem with this cover is the male portraying Tony. It's just not working for me.

Book Review:

Of the three books currently available in the GenTech Rebellion series, Claiming Charity is my second favorite book, Winning Glory being the first. In this book, the Nameless Ones have stolen the Cortexiphan that the government had shelved to stabilize the V4's genetic code. The team heads to the swamps of Louisiana to try to recover the stolen drug and stop the V4's from becoming virtually invincible.

While fighting snakes, alligators, and their own kin to recover the Cortexiphan, Charity and Tony struggle with their feelings for each other. Charity has trouble reconciling her feelings for Tony, while she still hates the Nameless Ones. Tony tries to prove that he's not like the other Nameless Ones who hurt her, but he has trouble accepting her apparent joy in getting her revenge by killing Nameless Ones. So Tony and Charity have this tug-of-war going on with each other and themselves.

I really loved reading about Tony and Charity as a couple. They have many challenges they need to overcome, but what I loved the most was their innocence when it came to relationships and intimacy. They're both adults, so of course they know about sex and how it works, but the fact that neither of them had ever had sex and were experiencing it for the first time together was really appealing. Even though they are new to relationships with the opposite sex, I really liked how they explored everything together. I just really enjoyed the newness and innocence that these two had together. I really feel like they are going to have no problem making it. They may hit a bump or two, but I think they'll be very happy together.

Beside the fight against the Nameless Ones and the developing relationship between Charity and Tony, there was a moment concerning Milton that was kind of scary. My heart was pounding and I was hoping that everything would work out. I really believe that Milton is the one that keeps this group together. He's the glue, and if anything were to happen to him, the group would fall apart.

After reading the preview for Loving Hope, I desperately want the next book. I can't wait to continue this series and read about Hope and Charlie.

Rating:

I gave Claiming Charity a 5 STAR rating. I loved reading this new adventure and fight against the Nameless Ones. Each new mission is getting more dangerous. I absolutely loved Charity and Tony. I really think that they are perfect for each other. And just to spice it up, one of the team ends up in grave danger. This series just gets better and better.

Ann Gimpel is a mountaineer at heart. Recently retired from a long career as a psychologist, she remembers many hours at her desk where her body may have been stuck inside four walls, but her soul was planning yet one more trip to the backcountry. Around the turn of the last century (that would be 2000, not 1900!), she managed to finagle moving to the Eastern Sierra, a mecca for those in love with the mountains. It was during long backcountry treks that Ann’s writing evolved. Unlike some who see the backcountry as an excuse to drag friends and relatives along, Ann prefers solitude. Stories always ran around in her head on those journeys, sometimes as a hedge against abject terror when challenging conditions made her fear for her life, sometimes for company. Eventually, she returned from a trip and sat down at the computer. Three months later, a five hundred page novel emerged. Oh, it wasn’t very good, but it was a beginning. And, she learned a lot between writing that novel and its sequel.

Around that time, a friend of hers suggested she try her hand at short stories. It didn’t take long before that first story found its way into print and they’ve been accepted pretty regularly since then. One of Ann’s passions has always been ecology, so her tales often have a green twist.

In addition to writing, Ann enjoys wilderness photography. She lugs pounds of camera equipment in her backpack to distant locales every year. A standing joke is that over ten percent of her pack weight is camera gear which means someone else has to carry the food! That someone is her husband. They’ve shared a life together for a very long time. Children, grandchildren and three wolf hybrids round out their family.

5 Star Book Review | Easy Silence by Beth Rinyu

EASY SILENCE
by Beth Rinyu
Published: July 9th, 2015
Genres: New Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Provided by Give Me Books for Review
Purchase: Amazon

My Rating: ★★★★★
They say you never forget your first love. No matter how many more come along or how much time goes by, there will always be that one person who will be forever embedded deep inside your heart and soul. For me, that was Jaxson Callahan.

We were complete opposites. I was a senator’s daughter. My parents were always too busy keeping up appearances on the political scene to show me love, so instead they bought my affection.

He was the son of a woman who allowed men to use and abuse her as well as him, just for her next fix.

We became each other’s solace during that summer we met, creating a lifetime of memories in three short months. I provided him with a sense of hope that there was more than just the harsh reality of the life he had grown accustomed to, and he showed me a genuine love that I had been yearning for my entire life. We vowed to be together forever. I loved him and he loved me…. and nothing would keep us apart.

Nothing except the secrets that were hiding in that small seaside town.

Secrets that altered our destiny. We were never given any warning as we watched our future shake, crumble and disappear altogether, leaving us with nothing but memories of a bittersweet past.

Life can be beautiful.

Life can be kind.

And, life can be heartless…..because nothing about our situation was fair.

Cover Review:

The cover of Easy Silence is perfect for this book. The model portraying Samantha looks to be in reflection, perhaps thinking about "the best summer" of her life and the love she had with Jaxson. I really like that she has her mermaid locket that Jaxson gave her (although it looks more like a pocket watch). The smokey, unfocused edges reinforce the perception that the character is reflecting on the past. And the use of the black and white tone gives the cover an almost timeless feel to it. I love the cover almost as much as I love this book.

Book Review:

Easy Silence completely destroyed me emotionally. I don't think that I'm going to be getting over this one for a long time. Just thinking about the story while writing this has me wanting to cry again. And boy, did I cry. There is so much emotion in this book, and I felt each one. I really believe that it's a testiment to an author's writing ability when they can make a reader feel such deep emotions in their books. Beth Rinyu has written a book that will be in my heart forever.

I adored Samantha and Jaxson. Their relationship definitely wasn't easy. Even though there's a lot of heartbreak, their love for each other is a kind that I'm honestly envious of. Their connection seems to transcend time and really everything. When you realize how deep their connection truely is, I can't even find the words to say to describe it. I so desperately wanted them to be happy together and have the life and future they dreamed of having.

I felt so much for Jaxson. His childhood was horrible and unimaginable. The pain that he's carried for so long, it broke my heart. He closed himself off from caring or loving anyone, until Samantha came along. The only time he knew true love was when he was with her. I wanted him to finally have the happiness he had with Samantha and the future he never believed he'd have or deserve. But the past has a way of creeping up on you when you least expect it.

I really liked how the story really fit with the title. Easy Silence refers to Samantha and Jaxson's ability to be completely at comfortable in the silence between them. About how they are able to say a million things without uttering a single word. I would love to have the easy silence with someone.

I just cannot say enough how much I absolutely loved this book. I'd give Easy Silence an infinite star rating if I could.

Rating:

I gave Easy Silence a 5 STAR rating. This book took me on an emotional roller coaster that I'm still recovering from. You know that you've found a truly talented author when you read a story that evokes the kind of emotion that I felt while reading Easy Silence. I doubt I'll ever forget this book and the impact it made on me. Samantha and Jaxson have become one of my favorite couples, even if their happy ending wasn't what you'd expect.

Ever since I can remember, I have always enjoyed Creative Writing. There was always something about being able to travel to a different place or become a different person with just the stroke of a pen - or in today's world a touch of the keyboard. I am the author of The Exception To The Rule, An Unplanned Lesson, An Unplanned Life Drowning In Love, A Cry for Hope, A Will To Change, Blind Side of Love, When The Chips Are Down and Easy Silence.

My life is not as interesting as my books or the characters in them, but then again whose life is? I'm a mom of twin teenage boys, a crazy Border Collie and a cat with an identity crisis! I guess you can say writing is my form of Calgon!

Thanks for taking the time to learn about my books and me! If you decide to read them (and I hope you do!) please be sure to go on and review it for me - yes, even if you don't like it!

The line between hunter and hunted thins, blurs, and finally shatters.

Series Backstory: Sometime between the interminable wars in the Middle East and 9/11, the United States moved forward breeding a race of super humans. Clandestine labs formed, armed with eager scientists who’d always yearned to manipulate human DNA. At first the clones looked promising, growing to fighting size in as little as a dozen years, but V1 had design flaws.

Seven years ago, a rogue group turned on their creators, blew up the lab, and hit all the other breeding farms, freeing whomever they could find. In the intervening time, they’ve retreated to hidden compounds and created a society run by men. Women are kept on a tight leash because the men fear if they discover their innate power, they’d launch their own rebellion.

Being a genetically altered human without a name grew old, so Glory named herself. Surrounded by a maze of unpleasant alternatives, she makes a bold choice and ends up a fugitive in the midst of a Minnesota winter. Once she’s on the run, she discovers how unprepared she is for life outside her protected compound.

CIA agent, Roy Kincaid, devoted his career to hunting super humans who staged a rebellion seven years before. He’s not making much headway, so he goes deep undercover. One blustery night, a striking woman staggers into the café where he’s catching a late meal. Part waif, part runway model, the half-frozen woman arrows straight into his heart.

Glory’s flat out of alternatives, but death in the storm might be preferable to telling the tall stranger looming over her anything. Sensing Roy is dangerous, she pushes into his head seeking clues and discovers he hunts those like her. Maybe she can fool him, just for tonight. Get a hot meal and dry motel room out of the deal. If she’s lucky, he’ll never find out she’s on the run from the same group he’s targeted for death.

The thing she didn’t count on was falling in love.

Cover Review:

I'm going to be honest, I don't like the new cover. I very much loved the original cover because it showed not only that Glory and Roy are fighting together against the baddies, but it also showed the emotional attachment they develop. In this new cover they are fighting together, but there is distance between them. I don't like it at all.

Book Review:

Winning Glory brings us the story of a genetically enhanced woman named Glory, who being tired of the oppressive life she's been forced to live, chooses to leave and try to make a life for herself on the outside. But the Nameless Ones who are in charge of the compound that she lived in aren't going to let her get away so easily. Glory makes it to Minnesota during a snowstorm; freezing and hungry she enters a small cafe diner where she meets Roy Kincaid. She's wary of him, but as he helps her evade those hunting her, she trusts her life and her heart to Roy. Joining Roy and his team on their mission against the super humans, Glory  has her own mission to save as many women of her kind who want to escape their oppressive lifestyle.

One of my favorite parts of this book was seeing Glory's journey from a frightened victim trying to get as far away from her oppressors as possible to a tough heroine determined to return to her former home and free her friends from the life she left behind. The abilities that the super humans have were really interesting and more kept being revealed, even abilities that they didn't even know that they had. I really enjoyed the training sessions where Glory was teaching all the men of Roy's team, who also got the injections that put them on equal footing with the "freaks," how to use their potential abilities. It turned out that they were capable of more than they thought. Teaching them also gave Glory a sense of accomplishment that she's never felt before.

Roy has his special black-ops team that fights the super humans, and I thought that it was exciting when they tossed around the idea of Glory leading her own team with the women that they rescue from the compounds. I was thinking that it would be cool if they used the name Valkyrie for their team, after Roy told Glory that she looked like a Valkyrie when she was fighting the Nameless Ones. So I'm looking forward to seeing how the women's team will work in the future.

I loved Roy and Glory's relationship. It started with a simple kiss, one that was really important to Glory for the fact that it was the first time she ever kissed a man when it was her choice and not forced on her. When they link their minds for the first time, it was such an intimate experience that it amplified what they were already feeling. In some ways it seems like their relationship moves really fast, but with the mind link and the amount of time that actually passes, their relationship moves at a pretty normal rate. I really liked how when they had their time alone, they agreed not to think about the past or the future and just focused on the present and being together. Glory leading her own team would also prevent any fraternization concerns, so that's an added cool bonus for forming a women's team.

Winning Glory has so much great things going for it, and I loved that there was an excerpt from the next book, Honor Bound, at the end of the book. From what I read, this series is just going to keep getting better and better.

Rating:

I gave Winning Glory a 5 STAR rating. I loved everything about this book! Glory's journey from a suppressed and frightened victim to a tough, passionate, kick-butt heroine was amazing. The romance between Roy and Glory is steamy and the love they have is deep and in some ways innocent. And I loved the mission to take down the men of the rebellion compounds. There is just so much awesomeness in this book!

“Dessert, hon?” The waitress sidled back over to him, and Roy realized he was her only customer.

“Sure. What do you have?”

She rattled off a series of pies and cakes. He chose apple pie with a scoop of ice cream, and she left with his dinner plate. Roy slumped against the chair. He had to keep going. No choice. Not really. A good night’s sleep, coupled with the first adequate meal he’d had in a couple days might make a big difference in his attitude. At least he hoped they would.

He’d just begun on the pie, which had a surprisingly flaky crust, when a rush of cold air yanked his attention toward the door. A tall woman walked in. Long, dark hair caked with snow swirled around her, and she held her body tightly as if she were really cold. Roy glanced at her feet and was shocked to see a pair of tennis shoes with holes in them. Good God, had she been outside with such inadequate footwear? Didn’t she understand she could freeze to death? Even his stout boots didn’t do much to divert the cold.

Keeping her gaze downcast, she made her way to the counter and sat.

“Coffee, hon?” The waitress asked.

“How much is it?” the woman inquired.

“Two bucks.”

“Oh.” The woman’s shoulders drooped, and she swiveled the stool around, getting ready to go back out into the storm.

“No, you don’t.” The waitress’s voice sharpened. “I’ll stand you a coffee. You look about done in.”

The woman’s even features melted into what looked like relief before she turned back to face the counter. “Thank you. That’s really kind and I appreciate it. My wallet was stolen, and—”

“Never you mind.” The waitress patted the woman’s shoulder. “Bet you’re hungry too.” She poured hot coffee into a mug and handed it to the woman, who drew the steaming liquid to her lips.

“Maybe a little,” the woman ventured. She clasped the cup with fingers white from cold.

By now, Roy knew he was staring, but he couldn’t make himself turn away. There was something waiflike and alluring about the tall woman with long, black hair. Snow dripped off her, creating puddles around her stool. All she wore against the winter weather was a thick, gray sweater and worn jeans. No scarf. No gloves. No hat. He was close to certain her wallet hadn’t been stolen. She looked more like an abuse victim on the run to him. Maybe he could help her get to her intended destination, if it wasn’t too far out of his way.

He pushed his chair back and made his way to the counter. “Say—” he began, but she started and drew away as if she expected him to hit her.

I was right. Abuse victim for sure.

“I’m not going to hurt you.” He kept his voice low, soothing. “Order whatever you want, and I’ll pay for it.”

She kept her gaze on her hands clutching the coffee cup. “I can’t let you do that, sir. I’m all right. Truly I am.”

Without waiting for an invitation, he took the stool next to hers and called to the waitress. “Bring her the same meal I just had.”

“You got it, hon,” rang from the direction of the kitchen.

“You are not all right,” Roy said. “You’re thin as a rail, and you were shivering when you came in here. In fact, you still are. I’ll bet your shoes are wet clear through.” When she didn’t respond, he ploughed on. “Let me help you.”

She shook her head. “Don’t want your kind of help. It always comes with strings.”

“Mine doesn’t.”

He pushed a little with his enhanced mental ability to get her to look at him. If she did, maybe she’d see truth in his eyes. A shudder ran down her thin frame, but she dragged her gaze upward reluctantly. Roy felt bad for forcing her, but he didn’t have time to soothe her wounded places, which he suspected ran deep.

Eyes a shade of green he’d never seen inspected him. Long, thick lashes framed those eyes, and they were set in a face with high cheekbones, a high forehead, and black eyebrows winging a track over porcelain skin.

“Who are you?” The words tore from him. He hadn’t meant to say them. She was nervous as a feral cat as it was.

She shook her head sadly. “No one. I’m no one. You’ll forget all about me when you leave here.”

Something shifted in his mind, but he fought it. Before he could determine if something real had just happened or if he were imagining things, the waitress showed up with the woman’s dinner.

“Here you go, hon. Hope medium’s okay for that steak?”

“Fine, thank you.” Before the words were out, the woman picked up the fork and knife and shoveled food into her mouth.

Roy congratulated himself on a good call. Even though she’d been reluctant to admit it, she really was starving. He had no idea what she’d do tomorrow or the next day, but it wasn’t his problem. While she ate, he observed her from the corner of his eyes. In addition to being hungry and underdressed, she looked young. Maybe twenty. He’d be surprised if she were much more than that.

He shook a mental finger at himself. The country was full of abused women running from the men who used them as punching bags before they raped them. It was one part of law enforcement work he’d never understood: why the women kept going back for more.

“There are safe houses for girls like you,” he said, and could’ve kicked himself. What the hell was wrong with his mouth tonight? He couldn’t seem to keep words on the other side of it.

She stopped chewing long enough to glance at him. “What’s a safe house?”

“A place where women like you can go so whoever’s after you can’t get to you.”

“What makes you think someone’s after me?” Color splotched across her white cheeks.

Roy took a deep breath. “I was a cop for a long time.”

Her entire body tightened, and he wondered if he’d been wrong about why she was out in the storm. “You said was.” She swiped a paper napkin over her lips. “Are you still?”

“No. Not anymore.”

She took another bite, clearly thinking about what he’d said. “These people you think are after me. Could they still find me in a safe house?”

He wanted to lie to her, but didn’t. “Sure. Anyone can find anybody with the Internet and all, but the people who run the safe houses won’t let anyone who might hurt you inside.”

She drew her arched brows together and drank some coffee. “I’d have to go outside sometime. Work. Earn my way.”

He nodded. Those things were all true. He scratched his head and pushed too-long hair out of his eyes. “Sometimes, when a man is really persistent, there are ways of setting you up with a different identity in a different part of the country.”

Interest lit her features, and she cut up the last of her steak. “Where would I go to have that happen?”

“I’m not sure, but we could check with local agencies in the morning.”

A blank expression washed over her face, as if someone had shut out a light. She shot him a look she might have given yesterday’s overripe trash. “Morning, huh? You’re just like all the rest of them, mister. Means I’d have to spend the night with you.”

Roy winced. He hadn’t been thinking. Of course she’d make that connection. “No.” He shook his head emphatically. “I’d buy you your own room for the night. You can clean up, get some sleep, and we’ll regroup in the morning after breakfast.”

She narrowed her eyes, and he felt himself drawn into their depths. “My own room with a locked door?”

He nodded solemnly, willing her to believe him. If he could just do one decent deed, it would make up for the last two weeks of beating his head into a brick wall. Maybe it would give him enough juice to keep hunting for the scientists who were a bunch of Houdini fuckers.

“Mmph.” She started on her potato, taking large bites. In between them, she said. “I’m trying to figure out your angle. If I’ve worked my way around to believing you won’t hurt me by the time I’m done eating, I’ll accept your offer.”

It was the best he was likely to get. Roy stood. “Fair enough. I’m going to finish my pie.” It was sitting in a pool of melted ice cream, but he didn’t mind. “If you’d care to accept my help, just stop by my table on your way out. If you walk past, I give you my word I won’t bother you.”

“Deal.” She said around a mouthful of food. Swallowing, she twisted to look at him.

It felt as if she were staring straight through him, but Roy held his ground even after he identified a zing of power withdrawing from his mind. What the hell was she, anyway? When she returned to her dinner, he retreated to his pie, thoughts racing a mile a minute. What the fuck was he doing? If he were smart, he’d forget his offer, throw enough money on the table to cover both meals, and run like hell for his car.

There was something about the woman, though, an appeal that drew him, snared him, and wouldn’t leave him be. He ate mindlessly, not tasting the pie. He knew the feel of freak mind control. Was that it? Had he inadvertently stumbled onto one of them?

Impossible. They’re never by themselves, and whatever she examined me with didn’t feel quite right.

Plus, she didn’t resemble the ones he’d killed before. They had dark hair, but animal eyes. Amber, not green like hers. Of course they’d been men, but simple genetics argued they’d all look much the same if they came out of the same petri dishes.

Were there other augmented humans beyond those he already knew about? The thought fascinated and chilled him at the same time.

He scraped his fork over the plate and realized it was empty. Slugging back long-since-cold coffee, he dug for his wallet and extracted what he was certain would cover dinner, laying bills on the table and placing his empty mug atop them.

The woman looked almost done with her meal. What would she do?

What would he do if she walked by him and out the door? Would he be able to keep his promise and not go after her?
