Feature & Follow Friday | Required Reading

Feature & Follow Friday is a weekly book blogger meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read to help bloggers gain new followers on their site.

This week's question:

Is there a book that you were required to read in school that you actually loved?

My answer:

I usually hate being forced to read something. Especially when it's a book that I really can't get into. But there were a few during school that I really enjoyed. Here they are:

**Okay, so it looks like there were more than just a few that I enjoyed reading. And I think I may have read The Call of the Wild on my own, I can't remember. I also really liked the Shakespeare unit and the Edgar Allen Poe unit we had.

I am also giving away copies of My Soul to Wake by Tara Oakes on my Facebook Page for review!
Everyone who comments on the pinned post will receive a copy of the book!

MY SOUL TO WAKE
by Tara Oakes
Published: May 25th, 2015
Genres: Young Adult, Paranormal, Romance
Witchcraft. Reincarnation. True love.

These are the things of legend. Unexplained, some even say impossible… but nonetheless prevalent in stories and tales from all cultures and in every land from the beginning of time. What if there’s something to it? What if there is an explanation behind the mysteries and bedtime stories? Something beyond words?

SALEM, MASSACHUSETTES 1692

She was taken from him in the cruelest way... condemned, sentenced and punished out of fear of the unknown. How is he supposed to live without her? How can he go on knowing that in this life, they will never be one again? There's only one thing to do... only one option that will bring them together again.

SALEM , MASSACHUSETTES TODAY

Leah is taken on a weekend excursion with her best girlfriends to let loose, relax and have a little fun. What harm is there in a little vacation? It's not like the legends, the haunted history of the place can scare them away. It's all harmless fun.

Or so she thought.

Something seems familiar about the town. The trees, the winds, the feel of everything. Her ever present nightmares have become more intense within the limits of the old historical setting. She's prepared to write off the whole trip as nothing more than a case of her mind running away with the sensationalized magic here. When she meets a handsome stranger who's eager to know her in a way no one else can, she begins to think there just may be something more to this place, something more to him.

Will has been waiting, biding his time, and praying that she'll come back. He's broken the natural order of things to possibly find her again, weaving their way through the years until they can be together again. He knows he may never find her, but he can't risk not trying. This place calls to her, just as it did to him. It will bring her back home. It will bring her back to him.

What's 300 years when it comes to true love? He's prepared to wait an eternity if he has to, just to see her, hold her, make her his and to help her remember what was stolen from them so long ago. He’ll stop at nothing to make her remember who she is, the power she possesses, and the love they swore to each other.

  1. Oh wow! That's a LOT more books enjoyed than me! LOL! I pretty much hated everything I was forced to read. Well, except for one book! Though hate is a strong word. More like just didn't enjoy at all. They would definitely had been DNF if I thought my teachers would buy that! ;)

  2. I forgot about Night!! I had to read that for my World Religions class junior year, and I really enjoyed it! I remember The Crucible being okay...at least the parts I do remember. I really need to give To Kill a Mockingbird another chance. I think I got so irritated with all the analyzing and discussion that surrounded it for my class that I couldn't really enjoy it.

  3. That's a great collection of books! I LOVE "To Kill A Mockingbird"! This masterpiece is at the top of my list, along with "Jane Eyre", "Crime and Punishment", and "A Tale of Two Cities"! Of the others, I did try to read "The Diary of Anne Frank" (it was required reading), but told the teacher I could not finish it, because it just made me cry too much.....Of course, I didn't attempt to read "Night".

I haven't read "A Raisin In the Sun", but I have seen the movie version. I really need to read the book!

We read parts of "The Odyssey" in high school, but not the complete book. I must sheepishly confess that I have not read "Brave New World", or "1984". However, I did read "Animal Farm". This is along the same vein, as you most likely know.

Thanks for sharing your required reading! Have a GREAT weekend!! : )

  6. We watched the movie Odyssey when I was in high school and they went over bits and pieces of The Diary of Anne Frank, we only read the parts that went with the English lesson, when I was in middle school. Old Follower

  9. Followed on Bloglovin' -- I loved Shaespeare when I first started learning about him in school, but every year, without fail, we did one of his tragedies. It got so depressing having to do English when it was one of his plays :( I would have LOVED to do one of his comedies.

  10. That's so great that you loved so many! Only 2 of those books were required reading at my school - To Kill a Mockingbird and The Crucible. I remember enjoying The Crucible but being so angry. I haven't read any of the others unfortunately - I really need to make a list of classics I've missed and get reading. Thanks for sharing, Stina. :-)

  12. To Kill a Mockingbird definitely evokes all the feels even years later. I'm so glad it resonated with me in High School and I didn't dismiss it only to kick myself years later as has happened with other books!

  15. Hopping through. I liked The Crucible too. 1984 freaked me out. I'm not a dystopian fan.
