Feature & Follow Friday | Books You Hated

Feature & Follow Friday is a weekly book blogger meme hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read to help bloggers gain new followers on their site.

This week's question:

Name a book you hated.

My Answer:

The Vampire Academy graphic novel is the only book I have EVER given less that 3 stars. I gave this graphic novel adaptation 2 stars.

I'm very picky when it comes to the art in graphic novels. I love Emma Vieceli as an artist. I read her Manga Shakespeare: Hamlet book and loved it. But I'm not a huge fan of graphic novels in color. It only works for me if the coloring and art style work well together, and I think that Emma Vieceli's art is better in black and white. I didn't like the glare on the pages.

When it comes to the story, I think it was WAY too watered down. I just couldn't get into the adaptation the way I got into the original book. I wanted more of the story. But I'm sure costs would have gone up, since they were printing it in color. Which is another reason I think black and white is better for graphic novel adaptations of books. You can use more of the story.

I just didn't enjoy this book at all, which is a shame, because I really loved the original book. So I was really excited for this adaptation, but was completely let down.

We are organizing a book blitz for CHARLIE SULLIVAN AND THE MONSTER HUNTERS: THE VARCOLAC'S DIARY by D.C. McGannon and C. Michael McGannon, a young adult/middle grade fantasy. The blitz takes place OCTOBER 12th to OCTOBER 16th. There's also a review opportunity to be shared with the post.

PLEASE NOTE: Not only is this book perfect for a Halloween themed post, but this book also addresses bullying themes, which is an important topic for the authors, and October is National Bullying Prevention Month.

  1. I can understand that! I read these and liked them and thought the art was okay, but I really had nothing else to compare it to. They were among my first graphic novel read!

  2. Interesting choice. I haven't read many graphic novel adaptations, but I imagine they would be cut down slightly. And you definitely have to like the art to enjoy it. That's amazing you haven't given much less than 3 stars! These days I've been rating a lot only 2 stars. :-( Guess it happens! Old follower.

    My FF!

    1. I've read quite a few graphic novel adaptations that were able to keep most of the story intact, so I know that it's possible. And those books were printed in black and white, so that's why I believe that the story was cut down so much on this book. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. I really enjoyed the original series, but never got around to checking out this particular graphic novel adaptation. It's sad that they did such a poor job with this one. :(
